A Radon Barrier is a flexible sheet of material designed to prevent Radon Gas from entering a building (either a Home or a Workplace).
Current regulations stipulate that a Radon Barrier must be fitted into new-built buildings in at-risk areas.
The Radon Barrier is fitted after the foundations of the building have been laid, and is covered with a concrete slab.
It is essential that the Radon Barrier is fitted correctly and all overlaps are thoroughly sealed. Anything that protrudes through the Radon Barrier (usually Utilities like Water pipes, drains, electric cables and gas) must have a seal around it to ensure a well fitted Radon Barrier.
The Barrier comes in rolls and where these rolls overlap, the overlap must be sealed with either an adhesive, or a Thermal seal (where the two layers are melted together to form a join). This ensures the continuity of the Barrier.Using Radon Barrier products can give the following advantages:
- Radon control
- A radon resisting membrane will also act as a damp proof membrane to protect the building against the ingress of moisture from the ground
- Easy installation
- Meets with building regulations
Due to their nature, Radon Barriers are generally only fitted to new buildings.
In the case of an old building that needs Radon Mitigation, A sump and extractor fan can be installed to remove the build up of Radon Gas.
There are several types of Radon Barrier available - from 1200 gauge Polythene Barriers, to heavier, reinforced Barriers.
The Heavier, reinforced Barriers are highly recommended as the non-reinforced type can be easily pierced between the time the Barrier is fitted and the concrete has been poured. Any piercings in the barrier negate the purpose of fitting a Barrier
